The Orchard School

British Values

At The Orchard School, we are committed to promoting British Values as part of our pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. In line with the Prevent Strategy, British Values are defined as the promotion of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Our approach reflects our school vision of “Inspiring Success”, our inclusive ethos, and our core values of Courage, Determination, Respect and Kindness, which underpin daily life at The Orchard School.

British Values are embedded across our curriculum, behaviour expectations, assemblies, pupil voice, safeguarding practice and relationships, ensuring pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain.

Democracy

At The Orchard School, pupils are encouraged to understand that their voices matter and that they can influence decisions within their community. We actively promote democracy by providing meaningful opportunities for pupils to express their views, make choices and take responsibility appropriate to their age and stage of development.

Pupils contribute through:

  • Electing class School Council members through democratic voting
  • Pupil voice activities, where views are shared and listened to
  • Class discussions, votes and collaborative decision‑making
  • Curriculum activities that develop turn‑taking, listening and respect for others’ opinions

These experiences support pupils in developing confidence, communication skills and a growing understanding of fairness and shared responsibility, in line with our nurturing and inclusive ethos.

The Rule of Law

The Orchard School fosters a clear understanding of rules, boundaries and expectations, helping pupils to feel safe and supported. Our Behaviour Policy, safeguarding procedures and consistent routines teach pupils why rules exist, how they protect others and how they promote fairness.

We promote the rule of law through:

  • Clear, consistent behaviour expectations grounded in respect and kindness
  • Positive recognition of appropriate behaviour linked to our school values
  • Age‑appropriate teaching about right and wrong, choices and consequences
  • Safeguarding education, including online safety and knowing who to talk to if worried

Through calm, consistent adult modelling and restorative approaches, pupils learn that rules apply to everyone and help create a happy, well‑ordered community where everyone can thrive.

Individual Liberty

At The Orchard School, we nurture pupils to become confident, independent learners who are able to make choices, develop resilience and express themselves safely. This reflects our belief that every child is unique and should be supported to reach their full potential.

We promote individual liberty by:

  • Encouraging pupils to make choices within a safe and supportive environment
  • Teaching personal responsibility, emotional regulation and self‑help skills
  • Providing a broad curriculum with opportunities in art, music, sport and outdoor learning
  • We encourage pupils to think for themselves and make personal choices in their own work.
  • Teaching pupils how to keep themselves safe, including online and in the wider community

Our personalised approach empowers pupils to develop independence, self‑belief and aspiration while understanding that freedom comes with responsibility.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of life at The Orchard School and is one of our core values. We promote a culture where pupils learn to treat one another with kindness, empathy and fairness, recognising that everyone is valued within our school community.

Mutual respect is developed through:

  • Daily modelling of positive, respectful relationships by adults
  • Clear and consistent expectations for behaviour, rooted in kindness and fairness
  • PSHE lessons, class discussions and circle time that teach cooperation, listening and empathy
  • Opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively and build positive relationships

Through these approaches, pupils learn to appreciate the views, feelings and needs of others and understand the importance of showing respect in all aspects of school life.

Tolerance and Understanding of Different Faiths and Beliefs

The Orchard School is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and pupils develop an understanding of the different faiths, beliefs and cultures that make up modern Britain.

Tolerance and understanding are promoted through:

  • Religious Education, where pupils learn about a range of religions, beliefs, festivals and traditions
  • Curriculum opportunities and assemblies that celebrate cultural diversity and shared values
  • Teaching that challenges stereotypes and promotes equality and inclusion
  • Encouraging pupils to ask questions, show curiosity and develop respect for differences

By learning about and valuing diversity, pupils are supported to grow into tolerant, respectful individuals who are well prepared to live and thrive in modern British society.
