Mathematics

At The Orchard we teach for 'Mastery' in Mathematics and follow the GLF Maths Curriculum (since September 2020) which ensures teachers thoroughly teach all the required elements of the National Curriculum according to the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) guidance. This curriculum currently follows the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation Framework.

Children learn to be fluent in using number facts and understand numbers so securely that they can reason and solve problems with confidence. Teachers plan 'microsteps' for each lesson carefully building on prior knowledge and ensure children understand and use the patterns and structure of Mathematics through well chosen practical measures.

We share the number fluency facts we want the children to know with parents via our website so that these can be practised at home as well as in daily Number Fluency Fact lessons at school.

Children also learn about shape, space and measures through the same carefully planned, modelled and practical approach.

Teachers at The Orchard have benefitted from Maths Hub Training, participation in Teacher Research Groups and now in the Department for Education's 'Mastery in Number' programme.
